Varsity Head Coach: George Shimko
George Shimko accepted the position of head basketball coach at Queen of Peace High School in September 2013, but is well known as the owner of the George Shimko Basketball School (GSBS Basketball) which in January 2015 will be celebrating it’s 21ST year of providing quality youth basketball programming for boys’ and girls’, 5-18 yrs old, in Illinois and Indiana.
GSBS Basketball touches the lives of over 3,500 boys and girls each year. Coach Shimko consistently develops over 250 boys’ and girls’ players who are playing quality minutes on 23 different high schools in Illinois and Indiana. Coach Shimko has coached and developed over 15,000 high school players over the past twenty (20) years.
After not playing Varsity High School basketball, Coach Shimko received a college basketball scholarship and graduated w/ BA degree in Business Administration from St. Xavier College. After college, he played professionally overseas and played on the first North American team to play in the Baltic States against some of the top professional teams in Lithuania and the Soviet Union. During this tour he was named player of the game 3 times. Coach Shimko played in the Chicago Pro-Am Leagues for 15 years and has also played in many National tournaments with great individual as well as team successes.
Coach Shimko worked as an auditor for the United States Department of Agriculture for twenty (20) years and then in 1994, the George Shimko Basketball School was created with the motto of “Good Students Make Better Athletes”. GSBS Basketball is recognized as one of the top youth basketball organizations in Illinois and Indiana. Coach Shimko is a recipient of the Illinois Association of Park District’s – Good Sportsmanship Award and in 2012 was elected to the Sports Faith International Hall of Fame.
Based on the principles of GSBS Basketball, from 1998-2003, Coach Shimko created, designed and implemented all of the youth basketball programs, policies and procedures for the Chicago Bulls including the Chicago Bulls Basketball Schools’ summer programs, Junior Bulls programs, Chicago Bulls Overnight camps and the first NBA youth training facility called the Chicago Bulls Training Academy with facilities in Lisle & Schaumburg. These programs have touched the lives of thousands of children.
Coach Shimko’s plan for the Queen of Peace High School basketball program is to develop solid fundamental basketball players at all levels. These players will not only understand the game, but will care about each other on and off the court. Each player will have the opportunity to grow from Frosh to Sophomore, Sophomore to Junior and Junior to Senior in a positive and enriching environment.
Coach Shimko, would like each a young lady to know the following: “ If you are a young lady looking to attend a Catholic High School, if you want to have the opportunity to be part of a competitive and successful basketball program that will develop your individual skills, your team skills and if you want to be in a positive environment that will help you build your confidence and self-esteem as a student athlete, then Queen of Peace should be the choice for you and your family”.
